Here are some facts for February that i read:
3rd - The composer of A Midsummer Nights Dream and 'The wedding march' , Felix Mendelssohn, was born in Hamburg in 1809.
7th - Charles Dickens was born in 1812
10th - In 1840, in this the 'Month of love', Queen Victoria married her beloved Prince Albert
Queen Victoria reigned over England for 63 years. She was 21 when she married Albert. She was totally besotted with him and it was her that proposed!
It was this great monarch who is supposed to have said 'We are not amused'.
The love match lasted until Albert died in 1861. She was heart broken, she had built, The Albert Memorial and The Royal Albert Hall as monuments for her late husband.
After 1861 she never came out of black mourning dress.
Prince Albert - brought the Christmas tree tradition to England in 1840. He had presented one to his wife. She loved the German custom so much that soon the whole of England were decorating trees.

14th - Valentines day.
In AD 269 Valentine was martyred. He was a crusader for true love.
Roman Emperor Claudius was trying to recruit men to join his army. No one wanted to go to war, they wanted to stay home with their families. Claudius banned weddings - his logic being that if men were no longer married they would sign up to fight for him. There was huge opposition including that from Valentine. He started to secretly marry couples. Claudius found out and was so angry he had Valentine beaten to death.
The legend goes that he left a farewell note to the jailers daughter who he had befriended, saying 'From your Valentine'.
To honor his memory in AD496 Pope Gelasius set aside this date for romance!!

Very interesting. Especially the bit about St. Valentine and Claudius.
I once was in a short sketch called 'Woman Proposes' and played Victoria having to propose to Albert because she was a monarch and he only a prince. She was supposed to have married Albert's brother but I believe he suffered from haemophilia and so was rejected. I could be wrong. xx

February is fab, its that time of year that you just want to snuggle up on the sofa with a huge mug of tea and watch films!
