Peony

PEONY

Carman, Bliss, (1861 - 1929)
Arnoldus Villanova
Six hundred years ago
Said Peonies have magic,
And I believe it so.

There stands his learned dictum
Which any boy may read,
But he who learns the secret
Will be made wise indeed.

Astrologer and doctor
In the science of his day,
Have we so far outstripped him?
What more is there to say?
His medieval Latin
Records the truth for us,
Which I translate--virtutem
Habet occultam--thus:

She hath a deep-hid virtue
No other flower hath.
When summer comes rejoicing
A-down my garden path,
In opulence of color,
In robe of satin sheen,
She casts o'er all the hours
Her sorcery serene.

A subtile, heartening fragrance
Comes piercing the warm hush,
And from the greening woodland
I hear the first wild thrush.
They move my heart to pity
For all the vanished years,
With ecstasy of longing
And tenderness of tears.

By many names we call her,--
Pale exquisite Aurore,
Luxuriant Gismonda
Or sunny Couronne d'Or.
What matter,--Grandiflora,
A queen in some proud book,
Or sweet familiar Piny
With her old-fashioned look?

The crowding Apple blossoms
Above the orchard wall;
The Moonflower in August
When eerie nights befall;
Chrysanthemum in autumn,
Whose pageantries appear
With mystery and silence
To deck the dying year;

And many a mystic flower
Of the wildwood I have known,
But Pionia Arnoldi
Hath a transport all her own.
For Peony, my Peony,
Hath strength to make me whole,--
She gives her heart of beauty
For the healing of my soul.

Arnoldus Villanova,
Though earth is growing old,
As long as life has longing
Your guess at truth will hold.
Still works the hidden power
After a thousand springs,--
The medicine for heartache
That lurks in lovely things.

Day 3:

Talk about your favourite television programme:

It has to be Friends!!!! I watch it over and over and never get bored.

From Wikipedia:
Friends is an American sitcom created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman, which aired on NBC from September 22, 1994 to May 6, 2004. The series revolves around a group of friends in Manhattan. The series was produced by Bright/Kauffman/Crane Productions, in association with Warner Bros. Television. The original executive producers were Crane, Kauffman and Kevin S. Bright, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons.
Kauffman and Crane began developing Friends under the title Insomnia Cafe in November/December 1993. They presented the idea to Bright, with whom they had previously worked, and together they pitched a seven-page treatment of the series to NBC. After several script rewrites and changes, including a second title change to Friends Like Us, the series was finally named Friends and premiered on NBC's coveted Thursday 8:30 pm timeslot. Filming for the series took place at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California in front of a live studio audience. After ten seasons on the network, the series finale was promoted by NBC, and viewing parties were organized around the U.S. The series finale (the 236th episode), airing on May 6, 2004, was watched by 51.1 million American viewers, making it the fourth most-watched series finale in television history and the most watched episode of the decade. Friends received positive reviews throughout most of its run, becoming one of the most popular sitcoms of all time. The series won many awards and was nominated for 63 Primetime Emmy Awards. The series, an instant hit from its debut, was also very successful in the ratings, consistently ranking in the top ten in the final primetime ratings. It is now often regarded by critics to be one of the finest shows in television history. The series made a large cultural impact, which continues today. The Central Perk coffee house that was featured prominently in the series has inspired various imitations throughout the world. The series continues in syndication worldwide. All 10 seasons are available on DVD.

Day 2:

Talk about your piercings/tattoos:

I have had my ears pierced since i was about 2 or 3 years old when i told my Mum i wanted earrings. She said yes but only because she didn't think i would go through with it. Well i did.
When i was a teen i had a second hole in each ear. I have been trying to close up those holes for nearly 10 years without much hope.

I only really wear earrings on nights out - usually big sparkly danglers.

Tattoos - for years i have wanted one off and on. I'd like to have a fairy, but i have a feeling i'd get bored and i don't like the idea of a wrinkly tattoo when i'm old.
I hate tattoos on womens legs/arms/feet - they can never look elegant when they wear dresses/short sleeves. If i was to have one it would probably be on the back of my neck so my hair could cover it if need be.

I like these quotes about tattoos:

-Women, don't get a tattoo.  That butterfly looks great on your breast when you're twenty or thirty, but when you get to seventy, it stretches into a condor.  ~Billy Elmer

-I always look for a woman who has a tattoo.  I see a woman with a tattoo, and I'm thinking, okay, here's a gal who's capable of making a decision she'll regret in the future.  ~Richard Jeni

-“Honey, Would You Put A Bumper Sticker On A Bentley?” - Kim Kardashian (When asked why she doesn’t have any tattoos)

30 Day Challenge

I have decided to do the 30 day challenge like Victoria:

Question 1:

My middle name is Jill, after my Mum.

I think alot of people use families names as middle names for their children. I have heard some really dodgy embarrasing ones.

I'm happy with mine - it rings nicely with my whole name

Do you like your middle name/s??

My Birthday celebrations

First of all i would like to start off by saying thank you for your lovely birthday comments!! xx

I am now the big 30!!

I have had a lovely few days:

On Thursday, we went to see Katie Melua at Hammersmith (This wasn't for my birthday, infact it was originally ment to be in December and was cancelled) Katie Melua is fantastic live. We never miss a tour.

We had dinner at The gate in Hammersmith, a veggie restaurant that was wonderful. The desserts were amazing!!!

On Friday, a day before my birthday, my hubbie arrived home early from work with these beautiful flowers - Daisies, my favourite flower and 30 white tulips, our wedding flower.

I got some wonderful presents (below) and Cath Kidston Jewellary, Vouchers, Afternoon tea set and much more - i am a verry happy, lucky lady!!!

My gorgeous best friends gifts included a handmade card and jewellary:

Gifts from my hubbie and the boys:

Look at this gorgeous pressie from my Mum:

I had an amazing chocolate cake from my fave cake maker - Blue Lotus.
I also made some vanilla cupcakes:

On my birthday morning i was surprised with my presents and more cakes from Blue Lotus - mmmm carrot cake for brekkie in bed!!! And a beautiful rendition of Barneys - i love you song on the keyboard by my 3 year old :)

I share my birthday with my best friends little girl - we headed to her party and enjoyed, paninis and scones,  even more homemade carrot cake and Happy birthday sung to me by 13 little kiddies!!!

In the afternoon, the hubbie and i went to London for my main birthday treat:

We stayed at The Bloomsbury:

We had a complimentary cocktail in the bar:

And a fabulous dinner here:

We had more cocktails here:

And here (somewhere we have been visiting since we have known each other):

We woke to a wonderful breakfast tray in bed, my hubbie took me shopping in Covent Garden and then we headed home to spend the rest of the day with the boys.

And there are even more celebrations to come!!

My hubbie is also 30 this month so we have meals out with friends, another night away and a big celebration in Brighton later this year!!!

I think we are celebrating big for our 30th as we missed out on celebrations for our 21st as i was very pregnant with my eldest son - well thats my excuse anyway ;)
